Design

You wouldn’t expect much at this price but instead we have a stylish exterior along with a bit of flash on the inside. The style is simple but still looks good for a product that looks like it cost more than it does. With a 11.6 inch screen and a nice spill resistant keyboard it is nice to see that Samsung did not throw all their attention towards the interior.

Hardware Configuration

Samsung Chromebook 3 Review

Processor

Samsung fitted out this Chromebook with a Intel Celeron processor. Anyone who knows processors realizes Celeron is not what you want as it is only found in lower end machines. That being said this one is not bad for a Celeron running at 1.6 ghz with two cores means you will struggle with multitasking. However high activity can boost it up to 2.6 ghz which is around the baseline for mid tier laptops so thats not too shabby. With just a 2 megabyte cache though you will not be able to push it too far.

Graphics

Following up the Celeron processor we have a integrated graphics card. This Intel HD 420 graphics card will struggle with intense graphics. Even on the lower end applications you might experience some slow down that forces you to lower your graphics. Serious gamers will definetely be disappointed if they are looking to play all of the latest games. There is a pretty hard wall that will probably limit your gaming to the past decade.

RAM

Here we have 4 gigabytes of LPDDR3 RAM the most inferior type of RAM you will find in modern computers. However when it comes to different types of RAM most people won’t be able to notice too big of a difference. That being said with only 4 gigs and no space to upgrade once the slow down starts it will probably be there for a while. With the limited applications of this model though the RAM should be ok for what the laptop is made for.

Storage

For storage we have a tremendous plus along with a pretty drastic negative. The plus comes on the side of it being a solid state drive so you will get superior boot times and load times when compared to a standard hard drive. The negative side is just as big though you can find a work around. Only 16 gigabytes of space really limits the type of programs you can install as well as your normal file storage. It will last if your just storing pictures and text documents, but videos will fill you up quick.

Screen

The screen at a size of 11.6 inches is slightly larger than your conventional tablet. It has a matte anti reflective finish so you are good even under heavy sunlight. Image enhancer functionality allows you to get more detailed visuals in a pinch. Overall this is a pretty decent screen for this laptops surroundings.

Additional Features

With the aim to fill your minor computer needs Samsung made sure that they loaded this model with enough features that you can handle all the basics. VGA and HDMI ports are included for connecting extra monitors. We also have two USB ports one 2.0 and the other 3.0 for its ten times speed. The HD Webcam is a nice bonus to go along with the 4.0 Bluetooth these are the standouts of the feature in such a reasonably priced machine. After that we have a pretty standard wireless card with a microSD card reader to round out the average features. For the low end there are two 1.5W speakers that won’t put out great sound, but they create sound nonetheless.

Value for Money

Coming in right around $180 dollars a laptop in this range your really just expecting it not to be a brick. Samsung deliver with this model a machine that can do well with all of the standard word processing and web surfing that have become daily activities. If you are interested in a more focused machine though you probably want to look else where as we just barely cross the finish line on all of the basics. Considering all of this a functional laptop that can handle the basics for under $200 represents a pretty good value.

Samsung Chromebook 3, 11.6″ Review Conclusion

I hope you don’t have anything to heavy duty to handle because this computer won’t be able to handle it. It is however a great laptop for a tween or someone who just wants a laptop more powerful than many tablets that is also much cheaper. There isn’t anything drastic missing and with a 11 hour battery life you can handle the basic for a pretty long time. As long as you understand what you need to do and what you are getting this is a pretty good laptop for the casual user.
