Samsung 13.3“ Notebook 7 Review

Samsung 13.3“ Notebook 7 Review

Samsung laptops often fall into an interesting spectrum where the majority of people will appreciate what they have to offer because Samsung is such a well known brand and their products always seem to work well. The issue is Samsung seems to take their name for granted with laptops that are strong in certain areas while lacking in others which leads to them being a bit over priced. This is the case here as this is pretty powerful laptop though not especially powerful for its price and the design is quite questionable.

This is a fast and capable laptop for your basic operations, but outside of the touchscreen there is not really anything that pushes the boundaries.

Design

This is one aspect of Samsung laptops where they continue to display a lack of knowledge on the basics of laptop construction. The silver color choice looks good even if it is a bit monotone. We do have nice and rounded edges, but it still seems a bit bulky for a 2 in 1. The biggest problem however is the power button. For some bizarre reason Samsung chose to place it on the outside right as opposed to the more common embedding over one side of the keyboard. This wouldn’t be too bad if it was embedded, but having the power button stick out over there can lead to many accidental power downs, especially when you are moving the laptop. This issue allows it to be a good stay at home laptop, but really hurts its mobility.

Hardware Configuration

Samsung Notebook 7 Review

Nothing too crazy going on here with a standard setup. Like most 2 in 1’s we do not have a optical drive which is kind of wild considering how bulky the bottom of this laptop is.

Processor

For the processor we have a 6th generation Intel i5 6200U processor with some pretty good power. This processor runs at 2.3 ghz, but can overclock up to 2.8 ghz which is pretty standard for laptops on the lower end of the spectrum. With a price around $600 dollars though it is a bit on the low side as far as processors go. It is tuned for efficiency though which will help your battery life and it should be able to handle the types of operations this laptop is made for.

Graphics

Staying on the common ground we have a integrated Intel graphics card like most laptops towards the lower end. Curiously Samsung chose to go with the HD 520 over the HD 620 which you can find in many lower priced laptops. This might be an example of Samsung trying to slide in a weaker model to cut corners. This graphics card should still be able to handle a decent catalog of games on low settings. It is also just enough to do some graphical work though the graphics card is definitely one of this models weaker aspects, nonetheless, it’s enough for programming.

RAM

Here we have one of the stronger features for this model with a nice amount of RAM so you can multitask and do the things that this computer does well. Samsung went with 8 gigabytes of DDR4 RAM for this laptop which is pretty nice considering the rest of this laptops abilities. This is quite enough RAM to handle pretty much everything this laptop is made for without missing a beat. It will even help with your gaming since the video card needs to share memory.

Storage

This laptop is already pretty speedy so you cannot get too mad that they chose to go with a standard hard drive over the SSD option. This laptop has a 1 terabyte hard drive so you will not have much to worry about as far as running out of space. Though this is probably one of the main reasons that this 2 in 1 is bulkier than you would expect. The extra space is nice, but this is another area where it feels like Samsung is not sure what they are doing. Since this laptop is already fast they can skimp with the hard drive but it ends up bringing other parts of the package down with it.

Screen

The 13.3 inch LED-lit touchscreen is pretty nice and it can do the full 360 degree rotation. With full HD capabilities visuals should be sharp and crisp. The only real issue here will be cleaning of your fingerprints.

Additional Features

Once again you might be hoping for a bit more though some nice features are present. The most attention was placed on the battery life and still depending on usage that 9 hours could end up as 4. It does charge really quickly though and it has settings to help you maximize that life. We also have a backlit keyboard for a nice touch. However that is pretty much it as even the connectivity is a bit suspect. We only have one USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0’s which is puzzling considering you can find better connectivity on many lower price models and this is basically as low as you can go for laptop connectivity these days.

Value for Money

Sadly we just do not have enough here to make this laptop standout as a great value. You can find touchscreens for less with more power. When you throw on the design as well you start to question what Samsung was thinking. This would be a pretty good laptop if they took off a hundred dollars from the price, but you end up paying for the Samsung name it seems.

Samsung 13.3“ Notebook 7 Review Conclusion

While this laptop is fast and handles the basics pretty well it lacks anything to separate it from the pack other than its brand. That is about the worst thing you can do to me as a consumer because many people will buy this model with its inflated price just because of their trust in Samsung.

Out of those people many will be mostly happy with it thanks to infamiliarity with the rest of the market. However if you are reading this review do yourself a favor and keep looking unless you can find it at a discount.
