Microsoft Surface Pro Review

Microsoft Surface Pro Review

When it comes to finding a good tablet it is often difficult to find one that blends the accessibility of a tablet with the power of a laptop without running into other hangups such as battery life and display issues. Microsoft might have found the perfect balance with this tablet that offers impressive power along with all of the other things tablets are known for.

You won’t be able to plug it into a monitor and run the most intensive programs, but as far as a portable workstation goes you cannot do much better at least not with our current technology.

Design

Always a major point of contention for tablets since the concept is based on accessible design. This one has studied in the master class for tablets as it brings the sleek streamlined look of a tablet along with a fold down keyboard and a back support so you don’t have to worry about purchasing as many accessories to enjoy it as a tablet or as a more traditional standup laptop.

From the black and silver design to the rounded edges this model checks all of the boxes. The only issue here is it can get a bit warm and it would be nice if the bezel was a bit smaller for more screen real estate.

Hardware Configuration

microsoft surface pro tablet review

Pretty standard setup here you will need to get a mouse if you don’t want to use the touchscreen and we are missing an optical drive though that is normal for tablets.

Processor

For the processor Microsoft chose to go with an Intel i5 6300U 7th generation processor. The U series is more known for its power efficiency which helps this tablet reach its impressive battery life. On the other hand though it limits the ceiling for the capabilities of this computer. You should not have any issues though using this model for the basic working capabilities and even more advanced ones as this processor is firmly seated around the top of what you will find in a tablet combo.

Graphics

As per usual the graphical abilities of this combo model are not anything to write home about. We have a integrated intel chipset which puts a firm limit on higher level graphical functions without a performance card. Once again though this is par for the course when it comes to tablet combos and you will be able to enjoy gaming with the majority of games on the market, just don’t expect to be able to boost the settings past the low end.

RAM

With a nice backbone of 8 gigabytes of DD4 RAM this tablet has the speed to keep up with pretty much everything this unit is great for. Applications should load quickly and you won’t have to worry to much about random shutdowns as multitasking should not be much of an issue. Microsoft did a good job at providing enough RAM to make this model a high end tablet without overdoing it and pushing it past the rest of the hardwares capabilities.

Storage

With the size of this model it should be no surprise that it comes with a SSD hard drive, which is great when it comes to speed of operation when compared to a standard hard drive but often lacks in space. This could be a bit of an issue as we only have 256 gigabytes to work with. Though once again when we consider the type of programs this type of computer is built to run then the amount of space should suffice. 256 gigabytes is more than enough to store the tons of work documents that make tablets so convenient.

Screen

Here we have a 12.3 inch touchscreen that delivers extraordinary clarity for a small screen. With an absurd maximum resolution for such a small model the sharpness is great. As far as the touch screen goes this model is ten touch capable so you can customize it with your favorite gestures. Watching Ultra HD videos on this tablet is a delight as the vivid screen is likely the most standout feature of this model, thereby, this model is not the best choice for developer.

Additional Features

Outside of the touchscreen capabilities this model has a nice group of features that add to the value. A forward facing 5 megapixel camera with face recognition capabilities and a rear facing 8 megapixel camera give you a strong ability to capture the moment. 1.6W Dolby capable speakers give you some decent sound as well. We also have a ambient light sensor for clarity, plus a accelerometer, and gyroscope if you are interested in getting scientific with your mobility.

Value for Money

As a tablet the main competition will be anything from Apple and the Microsoft competitor has the capabilities to hold its own. While it does cost more than the closest comparable Ipad it is a stronger computer making it worth the couple hundred extra depending on what you are looking for. This tablet caters close enough to the laptop level that it gets a bump above the Ipad Pro for its specs alone. The Ipad may have a bit more features and look slightly better, but as far as the basics of computing go this model will outperform.

Microsoft Surface Pro Review Conclusion

If you are looking for a tablet that can also function well as a laptop then this is a great choice. It accurately hits all of the necessities for a tablet while providing laptop power and that cannot be discounted. However if you are looking to play games or anything more heavy duty than standard tablet programs you will eventually run into a bit of a wall.

The price to be better than most tablets while still being weaker than the majority of laptops is pretty high sitting around $1200 dollars. This is a pretty strong product at the head of the tablet market, just don’t expect premium laptop abilities.
