The Light Weight Option for Programmers

An Ultrabook is one of the best ways to go about this as they are made to focus on being lightweight while giving up on some unnecessary hardware.

Still it’s important to make sure you find an Ultrabook that matches the type of work that you want to accomplish. The dream programmers laptop would be light, stylish, and fast, along with having a variety of special features that will allow you to accomplish your goals comfortably and efficiently.

Word of Advise

With all that said, there are other important things you want to factor into your purchase.

Not all laptops are created equally for programming since programming is such a massive field. The first thing you want to focus on is what type of programming you will be doing.

There are basically two tiers to think about when purchasing a laptop for programming. The first tier is for your basic programming like coding where you don’t necessarily need graphical power.

The second tier is for graphical, and scientific programmers, this level of programming requires a certain base line of power that every laptop won’t be able to reach.

So depending on what you intend to do, you might find yourself looking at a vastly different array of models. I will be differentiating each model into what tier it can handle so make sure you know which one you belong to.

Features to Look Out For

Before I go further into the features of an Ultrabook it’s important to highlight the other features a programmer should be looking out for.

First and foremost you want a nice keyboard so you can quickly and effectively code. You also probably want a nice screen with a matte finish, as they are much better for your eyes than glossy screens especially if you plan to work outside in situations with heavy sunlight.

Speed is necessary for your general efficiency, while it won’t effect basic coding much it’s still nice to have and especially important for graphics programming. Weight is also a consideration for traveling purposes as well as when you are working from a less than comfortable position.

Ultrabooks are a term coined by Intel for laptops that fit a very specific size to weight spectrum. This is important for programmers as they are often traveling to different work sites and need a model that can comfortably fit in their lap.

Ultrabooks are known for walking the tightrope between portability and functionality that make them preferred for many mobile programmers. Most Ultrabooks aren’t made for gaming so you shouldn’t expect much from there unless you purchase a laptop made for the second tier of programming.

With that said, they are not hardcore simulation laptops. That department is reserved by the engineering laptops. However, you can work on amateur project easily.

Here are some Ultrabooks in different price ranges along with a short review to help you make an intelligent purchase.

Best Ultrabook For Programming Reviews

Let us now have a look at what the best ultrabook for programming is. Depending on your budget and your needs, we have broken down this list into different price range. This should facilitate you in choosing the right one.

Mid Range

These are incredible machines. They are less powerful version of the premium Ultrabooks. Although they lack in graphical power, they offer an exception core performance. Needless to say, they look gorgeous. When comparing to conventional laptops of the same price range, they are easily the better choice.

If you can live with the 13.3 inch profile, you will not find a more portable, elegant, and versatile machine as compared to the ultrabooks below.

In terms of programming, these Ultrabooks are suited for extreme coding and development work so long as you don’t work with intense graphics. They can run Photoshop or other professional software at a rookie level.

Coming in at 3.26 pounds with a backlit keyboard and three 3.0 USB ports this is a mobile workhorse. Windows 10 professional is also a nice upgrade over home. Still it isn’t made for graphics programming or any heavy duty as it can overheat. Another issue might be hitting the touchpad while you are working with the keyboard dependent on your hand size. Overall we have an extremely capable 2 in 1 for tier 1 programming around $700 dollars.

dell ultrabook Buy From Amazon

This Dell Ultrabook for programming follows the last one as far as functioning as an extremely light and thin machine. A 13.3 inch screen with a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 gives it a super clear display. The 400 nit screen allows superb visibility even in heavy sunlight.

The design is built with function in mind over style with a aluminum and carbon fiber build. The machine is sturdy and also runs pretty cool. With a i5 2.5 ghz processor and 8 gigabytes of LPDDR3 RAM the speed and power are adequate for any tier 1 programming. Dell also fitted this model with a 128 gigabyte solid state drive for superior boot times. Weighing in at 2.8 poinds this light laptop includes two 3.0 USB ports.

The standout feature of this model is it’s extremely long battery life topping out at 18 hours of use. The touch screen display is also really nice. This is a highly functional model lacking in some of the features or space of comparable low $800 models but it makes up for it with a smart highly efficient build it will handle most programs, stopping just short of the most highly intensive.

High End

These are cream of the Ultrabooks and they are exactly what Ultrabooks are supposed to be. They are expensive, but they have the best looks and hardware in the market. Featuring a QHD or 4K screen, the following laptops are not just the best Ultrabook for programming, but so much more.

If you want to make a shining statement about yourself at work or among your professional circle, then these are the machines to get.

ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW-US71

ASUS ultrabook for programming Buy From Amazon

Now this is more of what you expect in a high end laptop. The sleek silver design highlights an aluminum body that serves for a solid, sturdy, and shiny build. With a 15.6 inch screen it is a bit heavier than many Ultrabooks at 5 pounds but that’s still surprisingly light for how much power ASUS packed into this baby.

This not your average Ultrabook. You can consider this as a one of a kind workstation Ultrabook. You can do all sorts of graphic design work, video editing and even gaming.

We have a IPS display with a 3840 x 2160 resolution for an almost unreal amount of detail you will actually be able to touch with thanks to touchscreen capabilities. With an Intel i7 2.6 ghz quad core processor and 16 gigabytes of DDR4 RAM your imagination is the only obstacle.

An Nvidia GTX960M graphics card gives you high end programming capabilities. This machine also has a Thunderbolt USB port, a 3.1 USB port and three more 3.0 USB ports for maximum connectivity. Currently in the upper $1300 range this model has a high end price tag but actually delivers a ton of value. Covering through tier 2 programing this is a great model for a professional who doesn’t want any limitations on their programming desires.

Dell XPS9360-4841SLV

dell ultrabook for programming Buy From Amazon

For our first high end laptop we have a pretty powerful Dell. A silver aluminum build that doesn’t set any records for design. We have a 13.3 inch screen on a professional yet bland color scheme, the screen almost blends in with the edges for a nice wide screen effect. Visibility come at a premium on this model with 3200 x 1800 maximum resolution infinity touch display.

The power and speed are very apparent with a intel i7 7500U processor and 8 gigabytes of LPDDR3 RAM. We also thankfully have a 256 gigabyte solid state drive for hyper fast boot times. Sadly there is only a integrated intel 620 graphics card so you shouldn’t buy this for tier 2 programming. Heavy duty programs will suffer lag and shoot your cpu up to a hundred percent. The keyboard also doesn’t necessarily pop out and the webcam is in a weird spot at the lower left of the screen.

The weight is only 2.7 pounds and the price is around the mid 1200’s. This is an capable model but you are definitely paying a bit for the visual spectacle that this laptop delivers. A great build and super portable but it stops just short of full functionality for a programmer.

Specs at a glance: 13.3 QHD+, Intel Core i7-7500U, GTX960M , 8 GB DDR3 RAM, 256 GB SSD. 0.6 inches thick

Pros

  • Thin and light permium ultrabook
  • QHD+ resolution

Cons

  • Not as powerful as the ASUS ZenBook Pro UX501VW-US71 above in terms of processing power.
  • 8 GB RAM and 256 GB is insufficient for the price range.
  • Only integrated graphics

Budget Range

Ultrabook is a loose term. When someone talks about Ultrabooks, the first thing that comes into your mind is a premium and expensive laptop. Although that is what the original Ultrabooks subscribe to, the definition now has changed.

Any laptop that is thin and light and promises a great battery life can be considered an Ultrabook. Fortunately for us, the best ultrabooks for programming can also be found in budget range. These laptops have weak hardware; however, they are the most portable machines there are.

Here are our choice of best ultrabook for programming at a budget range.

ASUS VivoBook X540SA

best ultrabook for programming Buy From Amazon

ASUS VivoBook X540SA comes in with a very budget friendly model currently in the upper $200 dollar price range. Is this laptop an Ultrabook? Not really. However, it is the closest thing that comes to being a budget Ultrabook.

We have a nice silver finish that gives this laptop a steel machine like appeal. The screen is 15.6 inches with a maximum resolution of 1366 x 768. This will do for most programmers as the size of the screen should ensure that everything is visible. This model uses a chiclet style keyboard which is nice for typing you should feel every key well to encourage speed and accuracy.

The processor speed, RAM, and video card are all on the low end which will limit you to only tier 1 programming. We have 500 gb HDD which is great for space but poor for speed, you will likely want to upgrade to a SDD for more efficiency.

The weight is decently light at 4.5 pounds and we have a glossy screen along with one all important USB 3.0. The battery life is nice for the hard drive still giving you about 10 hours of life. ASUS provides a baseline model without any of the extra features you might want but we still have all the basics and everything a tier 1 programmer needs on a budget.

Specs at a glance: 15.6 HD, Intel Quad Core Pentium N3700 Processor, Integrated graphics, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, 500 GB HDD, 6 hours average,

Pros

  • Affordable slim laptop
  • Closest budget laptop to an Ultrabook

Cons

  • Highly lacking in performance
  • Not suitable for tasks other than beginner programming, processing, internet surfing etc

Here we have an incredibly thin model also sporting a silver finish. The 13.3 inch screen pushes out a maximum 1366 x 768 resolution which isn’t bad since any higher might make things frighteningly small considering the screen size.

The i3 processor and 4 gigs of ram will limit you to tier 1 programming but should be pretty efficient for that level. The key feature of this model is it has two hard drives, a 300 gb SATA drive and also a 20 gb solid state drive.

This means we can get the hyper fast speed of a SSD with the large storage capabilities of your traditional hard drive. Along with the two 3.0 USB drives this laptop has some nice features for the mid $400 dollar range. Weighing in at only 3 pounds we have a really nice plug and use Ultrabook that checks off all the boxes for tier 1 programming highlighting speed and weight.

Specs at a glance: 13.3 HD, Intel Core i3-2367M, Integrated graphics, 4 GB DDR3 RAM, 320 GB HDD + 20 GB SSD, 5.5 hours average,

Pros

  • This is one of the best under $500 Ultrabook.

best keyboard for programmingAs a programmer, you spend most of the time pressing keys. Therefore, it only makes sense that you invest in the best keyboard for programming in 2017.

The idea behind this is very similar to that of a car mechanic. A car mechanic never compromises on the quality of his/her tools; therefore, neither should you as a programmer.

The best keyboard for programming can go a long way in giving you a comfortable experience and could even enhance your productivity.

So, without further ado, lets dive right into it.

This list was updated on May 2017.

Best Keyboard for Programming 2017 Reviews

There is so much variety in keyboards that it sometimes become crazy to find the best one. There are the mechanical keyboard, membrane keyboards, programmable keyboards, ergonomic keyboards, etc.

If that is not confusing enough, each of the sub-type has more categories like tactile mechanical keyboard, soundless mechanical keyboards, etc.

In this list of the best keyboard of coding, we will break it down in terms of features so that it is easier for you to find your best pick.

Best Mechanical Keyboard for Programming

Mechanical keyboards really need no introduction. If you have the money to afford, these are perhaps the best type of keyboards to get. Every keystroke on these keyboards gives you immense pleasure.

They are generally high quality, expensive, and come in many switch types. Depending on your preference, you can choose the weight, actuation point, tactile or smooth feel, and even sound and no sound.

Corsair K95 – Extended

best keyboard for programming Buy From Amazon

This is the flagship mechanical keyboard from Corsair featuring Cherry MX Red and Brown switches. It has the options for customization and programming.

Although this is by a gaming brand, if you are looking for one of the best values in the market for a quality mechanical keyboard for programming, this is it.

Speaking of durability and quality, this keyboard uses aircraft grade aluminum for its construction.

There is nothing remotely close to the durability this keyboard would give you.

The keyboard offers high-quality features. You would normally expect a keyboard to have ten key rollover – this is typical enough for any keyboard as you do not have more than ten fingers.

This keyboard; however, boasts 122-key rollover, so if you were to sleep on it, the keyboard would still be able to register each press separately.

Sometimes a product truly is so great that its pros would heavily out weight cons. This is such a product. However, nothing is perfect, so here you go: This keyboard has no USB hub despite the fact that it uses two of them itself to power.

This is a full-size keyboard meaning it has the NUM pad on its right but it also has 18 G-Keys. These 18 programmable keys are great for those who appreciate customization.

The programmable keys can be set to three different profiles which in total can give you 54 programmed keys. The control that this keyboard provides and the precision of the key actuation is flawless.

The construction of the keys themselves is such that you will seldom miss judge them.

The basic version of this keyboard offer Cherry MX RED switches. These offer smooth actuation without any audible click.

Specs at a glance: Detachable Wrist Grip, wired, 100% Anti-Ghosting, 122-Key Rollover, 18 Programmable keys with different profiles, Key-by-Key Back light, Media Control, Aircraft Grade Aluminium Chassis

Pros

  • Offers one of the best value for money
  • A lot of options for customization
  • A solid build quality that can withstand a good beating

Cons

  • Uses two USB connectors to power up
  • No USB Hub
  • Not supported on MAC
  • Does not come with a cover or a sleeve

Best TenKeyless Mechanical Keyboard

The TenKeyLess mechanical keyboards, as the name suggests, have fewer keys as compared to a normal sized keyboard. Specifically, they lack the num pad on the side. This is highly essential for those who are short on space or for those who like to carry their keyboard around.

Corsair Vengeance K65

tenkeyless mechanical keyboard Buy From Amazon

The best one in this also happens to be the one from Corsair.

It has the same rugged, anodized aluminum chassis as the Corsair K95 above, but obviously, has ten keys less.

If you are looking for solid and best tenkeyless mechanical keyboard for programming, then this should be on the top of your list.

Unfortunately, there is one drawback. There are no programmable keys on this keyboard.

Being a much smaller keyboard, it is also quite affordable as well as portable. You can take this around with you all the time in your travels. It even has a detachable USB with cable routing.

Despite being a 10-keyless keyboard, it uses the standard key sizes. Therefore, the typing still remains comfortable.

The keyboard uses MX Red Switches. It has Anti-Ghosting and Full Key Roll over features too.

However, if you like to customize your keyboard, then this isn’t the perfect choice for you. This is for those who prefer precision and comfort.

Specs at a glance: Cherry MX RED, 100% Anti-Ghosting, 100% Key Rollover, Aluminium Chassis

Pros

  • High grade build quality
  • Cable routing
  • Precision with linear MX Red switches.

Cons

  • No wrist grip
  • Lacks programmable keys
  • Does not offer back light.

Best Budget Mechanical Keyboard

Let us face it, we all want a mechanical keyboard. However, they are generally quite expensive. This is also true for programmers who are on a type budget.

Therefore if you are looking for the best keyboard for programming at a budget with mechanical switches, you are in luck.

TOMOKO Mechanical Keyboard

budget keyboard for programming Buy From Amazon

Granted, it does not use the best of construction material, but most of us don’t really care as long as the keyboard works and feels great.

That is basically the idea behind this keyboard.

This keyboard uses Cherry MX Blue switches that will provide you with a tactile feedback. Meaning, you feel the click and noise. This is generally said to improve speed and precision.

This is a tenkeyless mechanical keyboard, so it lacks a num pad. However, it has an FN key with which you can gain access to media controls.

Other than that, this is a very simple keyboard. It is compatible with both Windows and MAC.

One of the best features of this keyboard is that it is water-resistant. Therefore, if you accidentally spill something over, you can rest assured that it’ll still get the work done.

It also comes with key-cap puller so that you can clean the insides of the keys sometimes.

Specs at a glance: Cherry MX Blue, Anti-Ghosting, Water-Resistant

  • One of the most affordable mechanical keyboard for programming
  • Water-Resistant
  • You get a Key-Cap Puller
  • MAC Compatible

This back-lit illuminated mechanical keyboard is considered to be one of the finest among professionals. For that reasons, it is also one of the best keyboard for programming.

This is a simple looking keyboard; however, it greatly balances its look with its performance. There are two Switch types that you can get: Clear and Green. Green are more expensive because they come pre-installed with O-ring dampeners.

The clear switch gives you a tactile feel to the keystrokes. Everything about this keyboard speaks of quality.

That also comes with a hefty price tag. This has to be one of the most expensive tenkeyless mechanical keyboards in the market.

You get a lot of other goodies with this keyboard. You get a 6ft micro USB cable, a USB – PS/2 converter and also a Keycap Puller.

Unlike some of the high-end keyboards mentioned here, this particular keyboard is not made out aluminum, but of rigid plastic that feels solid. You will have no flexing issues caused by strains.

In terms of versatility not only does this keyboard have the function key, but offers something else that is unique, a DIP switch. This is there to give you hardware level configurable output.

For example, one of the functions it provides is the ability to switch to other keyb.oard layouts like DVORAK and COLEMAK.

If you like to have a clean desk space, then your keyboard of choice will definitely be a wireless keyboard. Whether you should go for a wired or wireless keyboard is entirely up to you. However, there are a few more things you need to consider as compared to a wired keyboard.

Best Membrane Keyboard for Programming

Membrane keyboards are your average affordable keyboards; the kind of keyboard that you would normally see in schools, offices or on laptops. The chances are that if you do not know the difference, you possibly are using a membrane keyboard right now.

Most of the membrane keyboards are very cheap to find. You can only find high-quality membrane keyboards in the gaming models.

The only high-quality membrane keyboard that is built for typing and programming is the Apple Wired Keyboard.

Apple products don’t really need an introduction. They are not to be the cream of the their pack. The Apple Wired Keyboard has a signature white on gray color and a simple texture.

The best part about this keyboard are the keys themselves. I am not talking about their actuation points or their sounds; I am talking about the pure feel of the keys.

If you have ever touched the keyboard on a Macbook, then you will have a very good idea about how this keyboard feels too.

Unfortunately, there is one drawback. This keyboard can only be used on MACOS perfectly.

If you want to use it on Windows, you will need to tweak it a bit.

The keys are soft with shallow actuation points. The are made of material and coating that gives you extensive grip so that you do no accidentally miss the key.

This keyboard is optimized for key travel. Meaning there is a thorough research done on how the keyboard is supposed to type. This type of perfection is typically expected from Apple anyways.

The keyboard also comes with multimedia control. It also incorporates two USB ports. It is slim and highly stylish. The keyboard is made of aluminum for highest durability.

Specs at a glance: Membrane keyboard, ultra-thin, two USB ports, multimedia controls, aluminium chassis.

Pros

  • It an Apple product, quality is guaranteed. Plus it the most famous keyboard for Mac users.
  • Shallow keys makes typing faster, the key design and feel guarantees precision
  • A plethora of function keys to control your MAC OS and multimedia.
  • Offers a USB Hub

Cons

  • Does not work well with Windows unless you tweak some settings
  • Lacks programmable keys.

Deciding Between Mechanical or Membrane Keyboards

So basically when looking for the best keyboard for programming, you need to decide between a mechanical or a membrane keyboard.

Many programmers prefer membrane keyboard because they are affordable. Now membrane keyboards have their subsets such as Rubber Dome, Conductive Rubber, and Scissor-Switch Membrane Keyboard.

Best programming membrane keyboards are mostly rubber dome membrane keyboards.

However, a vast majority of professional programmers, even professional typists, would recommend going for mechanical keyboards. To simply define them, they are the keyboards that make a clicking noise when the keys are pressed.

A membrane keyboard is simple to purchase; you just have to choose whether you like the design and form factor mostly and that is it.

With mechanical keyboards, it is a bit different because mechanical keyboards have different switch types. Switch types differ in the kind of sound the make when pressed and also their feel and actuation point is different.

With mechanical keyboards, you can find the type of keys that suit your needs the best. Some keys are fast; others are more precise. Some are soundless; others have a clicking sound.

We have talked further about different switch types further below in this article.

Other Accessories for Programmers

FAQ & Guide

Before you buy something, it is always a good idea to know as much as about the product as you can. This makes you a smart buyer and plus it enlightens you about the terminologies and the aspects of a product.

For buying the best keyboard for programming, you need to consider the follow key features.

Now you should note that you cannot expect all of the features to be on one keyboard. There will always be trade-offs.

  • Build Quality: This has a great impact on your use and it is proportional to the amount you are willing to pay. You get different build qualities for chassis and keycaps. Chassis are made out of Aluminium, Rigid Plastic or Flimsy Plastic. The Keycaps generally use the cheaper ABS plastic or the high-quality smudge or shine proof PBT plastic.
  • High Customization: This is a personal preference. Do you want to have programmable keys? Do you want to have key-by-key backlight coloring?
  • Types of Switches: If you are getting a mechanical keyboard, then they type of switch you get matters the most. There is a short infographic further down below explaining different switches.
  • Feedback: This is the feeling that you get from the key presses. Do you want a tactile/bumpy feel or do you want a smooth and linear feel?
  • Switch Between Keyboard Layouts: The ability to switch between different keyboard layouts is also important especially for programmers. Layouts include: Qwerty, Mac, DVORAK, COLEMAK
  • Color Schemes: This is again a personal choice. Most would go for the simple black color others would want the keyboard color to match the color scheme of the rest of their gadgets.
  • Key Travel: This is the distance a key travels before the computer registers it. This depends on your choice and is generally a big consideration with mechanical keyboards.
  • Actuation Force: This is the amount of force or pressure you need to apply to press the key. This is yet another function of the different key switches of mechanical keyboards.
  • Compatibility for OS: You need to make sure that the keyboard that you get is compatible with your OS of choice.
  • Backlight: This is an important feature if you work in dark environments.
  • Portability: If you travel a lot or if you have a small desk space, you will like keyboards that are portable. Generally, the Tenkeyless keyboards are excellent for portability.

What are Switch Types?

Switch types basically define the type of feel and feedback you would receive from key presses on mechanical keyboards.

There are many different switch types, and they are differentiated by their color. You would typically find them in Blue, Brown, Red, Black and also in propriety designs such as the ones on Razer BlackWidow keyboards.

Each different switch type (color) has different Key Feel, Feedback and Actuation Point. These are the three important parameters that a gamer would choose the switch type from.

Key feel can range from tactile and smooth; feedback can range from bump to click; whereas, the actuation point can range from 45 g to 80 g.

This Infographic should help you further with choosing switch types.

How Do You Silence Mechanical Keyboards?

There are many reasons why one would want to silence their mechanical keyboards.

  • You like everything about the keyboard except the noise. So you don’t want to replace it.
  • Perhaps you bought the keyboard not realizing the amount of sound that it’ll make.
  • Maybe you though having the sound would be cool, only to later grow tired of it.
  • Your family just cannot withstand that sound anymore.

There are many other reasons. However, the good news is that there is a very easy way to turn the sound off.

You simply have to get O-rings and Key-Cap puller. Then you remove the keys one-by-one and place that rubber O-ring on the plungers of the keys. This dampens the sound.

There are many types of O-rings that you can get. Each has its own level of reduction.

Define Anti-Ghosting and Key Rollover?

Ever experienced the phenomenon where you type really fast, and the keyboard accidentally registers and extra keystroke out of nowhere. This is ghosting.

Most of the advanced, and in fact all of the keyboard listed here have the feature called anti-ghosting.

Anti-ghosting basically gets rid of this problem. So if you are programming and you are pressing the keys really fast, the keyboard will not go crazy and accidentally press the Windows key, for example, for you.

Key Rollover pertains to how many keys you can press at a single time before the keyboard locks out.

If a keyboard has 6 Key Roll Over, it means you can press six keys, and the keyboard will register all 6 in sequence, on the seventh simultaneous press, the keyboard will lock out.

You can sometimes know this when the computer makes a beeping sound.

Most of the gaming keyboards have a good number of Key Roll Over. A 10 key rollover accounts for all ten fingers on our hands. A number greater than this is commonly featured on gaming keyboards. Wonder why you would need more than that – perhaps when you are raging and you happen to slap all the keys on your keyboard.

Conclusion

There are many types of keyboard available in the market. If you are looking for the best keyboard for programming, you first need to define your needs.

Do you need a wireless or a wired keyboard? The decision can most certainly change once you have looked at the vast variety of keyboards that you can get.

It is without a doubt that mechanical keyboards for programming are still the reigning king. The best thing about them is that you can get to choose exactly the type of feel you want thanks to the different switch types.

You can also look into other or more common and cheaper keyboard types like the membrane keyboards.

What to Expect from the Best Keyboard for Programming 2018?

Only time will tell what new technology the next year brings. We can see a trend that the mechanical keyboards are finally getting cheaper. This means we can hope to find more under $50 mechanical keyboards next year in 2018.

We are also seeing a growing trend for getting ergonomic peripherals. We can expect this trend to continue.

The trend for modular keyboards is on the decline. Therefore, we do not expect them to show up in 2018. In fact, with the current trend, the simpler the keyboard, the better it is.

Characteristics of the Best Mouse for Programming

Casual users don’t really care about what kind of a mouse they use. A simple mouse with two or three buttons is sufficient enough, provided that it comes with a low price.

A good mouse is much more expensive than what you are used to pay but being a professional comes with a price.

Bad and cheap mice can cost you some wrist pain, or even developing a serious condition such as tennis elbow. Don’t hesitate to spend some money to buy the best mouse for programming since you will use it every day and it will last for years to come.

Did You Know?

That there are different mice for different handedness. It is important that you take this into consideration when getting your best mouse for programming.

There are typically three types, left-hand, right-hand, and ambidextrous. The most common ones to find are right-hand. Most high-quality mice models have options for different handedness

Moving on,

These are the characteristics you will need to take into account while looking for a quality mouse for yourself.

Preferred Size

The most important thing to consider when buying a mouse is how good you feel using it. Some people are used to different mouse sizes because it all depends on what is your preferred grip.

If you get the size and the shape right, you will be able to see a huge increase in your productivity.

Grip

There are three different types of distinct grips, and everyone has its own preference. Like the size of the mouse, the grip is also an important aspect. The right grip can ensure a better handling and can save you from wrist pains.

The Three Grip Types

best mouse for programming

Palm Grip

Palm grip is all about using your palm to move your mouse. Your entire hand is placed gently on the mouse, touching it with your entire palm area.

  • This type of grip offers a fast hand and wrist movements, and you will be able to accomplish your tasks faster.
  • If you suffer from any pain of inflammation caused by excessive use of computers, this is the right grip for you because it is certainly the most comfortable.
  • This is the least precise and can also hamper your speed.

Mice which are designed for this type of grip usually provide good support for your palm, and a common example is the Razer Lachesis.

Claw Grip

The name of the grip is pretty self-explanatory. The way you hold your mouse with this grip sort of resembles a claw. Your palm rests on the back end. All of your fingers are placed on the top end of the mouse, bent in an arch and ready to click.

  • Users who prefer this type of grip are usually able to use every finger to perform different tasks, and they are generally more precise.
  • Mice recommended for the claw grip are generally longer with straight edges meaning you can easily pick it up and move.
  • However, this grip can be a little tiring and users often report bigger workload of their dominant hand.

There are a lot of mice designed for this type of grip, such as the Logitech Performance Mouse MX.

Fingertip Grip

This type of grip is much different than the other grips we mentioned above. The motion is completely different, and it consists of using only your fingertips to control the mouse.

best mouse for programming

Image courtesy: logitech.com [left optical sensor, right laser sensor]

  • The palm doesn’t touch the mouse at all so this can be a tiring and a painful method.
  • This grip is not recommended if you have any issues with RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury).

Sensor

Choosing the right sensor is also important. The type of sensor you get will determine what DPI you get and what kind of surfaces you can use the mouse on.

As mentioned earlier, the best mouse for programming isn’t necessarily the most expensive. Some of the high DPI sensors can be quite expensive. Your focus should be more on the ergonomics and the handling of the mouse.

There are basically two kinds of sensors for mice generally: optical and laser.

The Two Sensor Types: Laser Vs. Optical Sensor

Laser and optical are basically two different tracking technologies that the mice use for translation of physical movement to that of the cursor on the screen.

Although in most scenarios you wouldn’t bother looking at; however, when you are specifically on the hunt for the perfect mouse for programming this is one of the most important features to consider.

Optical

An optical mouse uses a LED to track movement. These were the first mice to replace the old ball mice. They typically have a DPI of 400-800, but can go all the way to 10,000. Here is a rundown on some of their pros and cons.

  • They are cheaper and therefore preferred by none gamers.
  • Stops tracking when picked up from the surface. Therefore, the cursor does not move from where you left it.
  • The mouse has lower DPI than Laser.
  • It is also not as precise.
  • It works only on opaque surfaces. You will need some sort of a mouse pad to use it.

Laser

This is a newer technology than the optical sensors. There are many different types of lasers and depending on that the price would be different.

  • They work on almost any surface. They are also relatively smoother on most surfaces. Depending on the laser, you can even use them perfectly on glass surfaces.
  • DPI can reach beyond 10,000 making them a lot more precise.
  • Some of the top-end models can be quite expensive. Therefore, an average programmer would have no need of it.
  • Laser mice can track a bit even if lifted up a bit. Therefore, you may loose your exact cursor position when you lift the mouse.

Most of the famous mice are available with both laser and optical sensor versions.

What We Think?

As a rule of them, if you want an affordable mouse with a decent DPI, you can get an optical mouse. Just make sure to carry a solid mouse pad around.

On the hand, if you are a graphic designer and a gamer too, then you will find the higher DPI of the laser mouse more suited to your needs. Plus, you do not need to worry about the surface that you will use the mouse on.

Different Mouse Sensitivities ( DPI – Dots Per Inch)

Mouse sensitivity is a characteristic which separates high-quality mice from their cheap alternatives.

It is generally considered THE feature that determines the quality of the mouse.

Sensitivity is always expressed in dots per inch or DPI. The common optical mice have an average DPI of 400-800. As the best mouse for programming, we recommend that you get a mouse whose sensitivity is at least 1200 DPI.

Getting a cheap 500 DPI mouse may sound like a good bargain but it will cost you comfort and precision.

If you happened to use a cheap mouse, you have probably noticed that some slight movements of the mouse are not even registered by the cursor. This means it has a low sensitivity and you certainly want to avoid mice like this. However, if you own a high sensitivity mouse and you’re having problems adjusting to this,

Most of the mice with high sensitivity have buttons on the side for decreasing sensitivity which allows you to quickly change it when switching from one operation to another.

How to do you tell the difference between low and high DPI?

There is a simple test. A higher DPI means that even a small physical movement of the mouse would take cursor all the way to the corner of the screen. Whereas, with a mouse that has low DPI, you will have to physically move the mouse quite a bit to take it to the end of the screen.

Also, there is a difference between sensitivity and DPI in the traditional sense. Sensitivity, as we know, can be increased through software settings even for a low DPI mouse (i.e. through OS settings, in-game settings, etc. ). However, changing the sensitivity that way destroys the precision of the mouse. On the other hand, a higher rated DPI mouse is sensitive as well as precise.

Wireless or Wired

This is basically the biggest challenge you will face when you decide to buy a mouse. There are certain advantages and disadvantages for each kind. Wireless mice are certainly easier to use. They are connected to your computer via a Bluetooth USB dongle or an RF USB receive, and they can be used on any surface nearby. This makes them ideal for laptops and doing some work on the go.

However, they have some lag which can sometimes feel long if you are really into your work. Wireless mice can run out of battery, and if you do not have some in spare, then you are left without one.

Wired mouse, on the other hand, is faster. They are usually preferred by those who need a lag free performance such games. They are also cheaper than their wireless counterparts. However, the distance you can use it from is limited to the length of the wire. Also, for many, the wire could be a nuisance.

Programmable Buttons

Some mice have certain buttons on the side which can perform all sorts of functions. It was already mentioned that certain mice have buttons which control mouse sensitivity. However, with programmable buttons, you can assign various functions to them via software.

For example, if you need to copy and paste a lot while programming, you can assign those functions as shortcuts. If you want to use your mouse to switch between different software and programming tools, you can do that too. Mice that come pre-packed with a lot of buttons are usually gaming mice. But, they can be a solution as the best mouse for programming too.

Generally, programmable mice are expensive. You can find great deals sometimes; however, the more programmable buttons it has, the more expensive it would be.

Other Accessories for Programmers

You will be delighted to hear that you can further improve your coding experience by investing in accessories and peripherals designed specifically for software developers. You can find monitors, mice, and even keyboard dedicated to improving your professional life.

Conclusion

Programming goes a lot faster with the proper equipment. A mouse is something that can enhance your programming experience.

A mouse needs to fulfill your set of requirements. Even though you can use any standard mouse that you find in the market, it is better to put some investment in a professional mouse.

A mouse has several characteristics as listed above. Depending on the quality of the components, the price can change drastically. Therefore, you need to make sure to spend more on something that you value more. For example, if you value the higher DPI more than programmable buttons, then you should choose the mouse wisely.

Furthermore, you need a mouse which can withstand hours and hours of coding every day for at least a couple of years. It’s a long-term investment so make sure you get the size correct, with an appropriate sensitivity and a few extra buttons for convenience.

Wired or wireless will be a tough choice. If you are just a programmer, then you can go for wireless programming mouse by all means. However, if you also game on the side, then a wired mouse will be the better of the two choices.

In any case, an average laptop for computer science should be able to meet the minimum professional demands. For instance, in place of the processor Intel Core i3 6th generation minimum is preferred. A dedicated NVIDIA or AMD graphics card is preferred along with at least 8GB of memory.

Are there any specialized laptops for programming students?

This question is fairly common. Every major category of users has a dedicated laptop. For example, gamers have their dedicated laptops; engineering students have theirs, so are there best laptop for programming students too?

Unfortunately, the answer is no. You will not find laptops that are designed specifically for programmers.

This is because any great laptop would do just perfect for programming. In other words, you can borrow a laptop from a major category for programming.

For example, if you are a beginner you would look at the budget laptops. If you are an average programmer, you could look at multimedia laptops. Likewise, if you are a professional, you can get a workstation laptop or a gaming laptop.

However, there is a common criteria. The best laptops for science science students are almost the same as the best laptops for programming. However, laptops designed for programming aren’t necessarily the best laptops for graphic design.

Therefore, if you are student of programming and graphic design you need to look at specialized laptops.

This way, there are a plethora of choices for you as a programming student.

We know that most programming students are on a tight budget. We have all been there. With Ramen noodles being a staple diet, it is hard to set aside a budget for a high-end laptop.

Therefore, below we have selected the laptops that are budget-friendly, yet deliver top performance/dollar value.

Best Laptop for Programming Student 2016

We have tried our best to fulfill the needs of the programming students. We know the budget issues. Therefore, we have selected the laptop considering the budget in mind.

Laptops Without Dedicated Graphics Card

A dedicated graphics card is a requirement for most programmers who do part time gaming. It is also essential for game development.

If you are just a beginner, then you will have little value for a dedicated graphics card. As a rule of thumb, laptops with dedicated graphics card cost more.

In the beginning, most of your projects will be simple. For such projects, even the integrated graphics card would suffice.[/su_note]

Therefore, save up on your money that you wold rather spend on something that has no use for you. Here are a few laptops for you to consider.

Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM – 7th Gen Core i3 – Perfect for Beginner Programmer

laptop for programming students

Buy From Amazon

If you are looking for the best laptop for programming students that harbors the latest in hardware, then this is the laptop to go for. This machine is still a budget laptop; however, it offers the 7th generation Intel Core i3-7100U processor. These processors have just recently hit the market.

There are cheaper laptops than this available in the market. You can find laptops that offer Intel Pentium for Celeron processors; however, I would not recommend them for programming.

That is because these processors are not future proof. Should you ever need to use your laptop for more complex projects, Pentium or Celeron processors will show lag.

The only relative drawback of this laptop is that it only has 4 GB of DDR4 RAM. For most users, this is quite sufficient; however, to some, this could be lacking.

We generally recommend a minimum of 8 GB of RAM; however, as a beginner, even 4 GB should suffice for most of your programming needs.

On the plus side, this laptop has one of the best battery life in the market with a 12 hours standby time.

We highly recommend this laptop if you are a beginner as it is perfect for simple coding or web development.

The Acer Aspire E 15 E5-575-33BM is fairly reasonably priced laptop given the hardware that it boasts. It does not have a dedicated graphics card; therefore, it is not something that you would use for hardcore programming or for game development.

However, if you are looking for a laptop that can be with you for most of the day without you having to charge it often, then this is the laptop to go for.

Along with an amazing processor and a battery life, this programming laptop for students also offers an FHD screen. People who like to multitask and have two windows side by side would benefit from the FHD resolution.
