If you are a programmer who is serious about his/her work, then you need to have at least this Dual Core i7 processor. It is not as powerful as the Quad Core i7 processor, but for the money, it has the best performance.

Design

This ASUS notebook comes in a smooth dark blue finish that looks like some type of space age material that radiates cool even though it’s only plastic. When you open it just looks like your run of the mill laptop.

Smooth rounded edges surround a 15.6″ inch screen and a 5.1 pound weight, that efficiently masks this machines power. You have a standard notepad touch pad with no other touch screen capabilities. Nice and slim about one inch when closed.

Screen

15.6 inches a full HD LED lit technology ensures crisp visuals with a max resolution of 1920 x 1080. This is much better than using an HD screen as it gives more real estate. The screen is very responsive with all of the standard tools to adjust it for your viewing pleasure. Everything is super clear like the waters in the tropics.

Hardware Configuration

ASUS F556UA-EB71 Review 2

Overall, the configuration of ASUS F556UA-EB71 is fit for moderate to heavy level tasks. For professional level video editing and graphic designing you may need to upgrade the RAM; however, as it stands, this laptop has a great hardware if you can live without a graphics card.

Processor

This ASUS laptop has a Intel Dual-Core i7 6500-U processor with a 4 Megabyte cache at 2.5 ghz that can be boosted up to 3.1 ghz. That’s pretty fast with decent multitasking and since it’s the U series it’s made for power efficiency over performance.

The i7 is a nice upgrade over the i5 you’ll see in many laptops at this price range. It doesn’t quite feel like an i7 when running on the high end. Here we have a young roadrunner not quite moving at it’s full potential but hey at least it fits comfortably in your lap.

Graphics

The graphics card is integrated so it’s not for any high end gaming but thanks to the processor it balances out this drawback. As a result, ASUS F556UA-EB71 is still pretty good for audio or video editing.

We can run any low end game at high settings and many of the high end games at low settings which is about the best you can ask for around $600 dollars. Great for anyone looking to do the standard things like web surfing and video watching just don’t expect it to wow people with top of the line visuals.

You will probably experience some serious slow down at the higher resolutions. This model can still walk the walk at your local fashion show but don’t expect it to make it to Paris.

RAM

Here we have 8 gigabytes of DDR3L RAM which is the industry standard for laptops in this range.

Their is room to upgrade but this RAM is very energy efficient and quick. Just enough for most gaming but you will likely have to upgrade for the higher end stuff but with the integrated graphics card their isn’t much reason to. Except of course, you want to do some next level professional work.

Like most laptops with the DDR3L and 6500-U processor combo we are geared more towards power efficiency over performance. We would all like a Ferrari but a nice Hyundai can still get the job done at much more affordable price tag.

Storage

This laptop offers a large 1 terabyte HDD hard drive for mountains of storage capabilities. Sacrificing the speed of a solid state drive in order to store a boat load of information. The typical consumer will have no worries about running out of space with a terabyte.

The hard drive will cut into your battery though so don’t expect more than six hours when you are not plugged in. Perfect for anyone who want’s to download hulking file sizes and isn’t worried about the performance issues that a solid state drive might help avoid.

So yes you can store your complete collection of limited edition Star Trek DVD’s.

Additional Features

This laptop is loaded with extra features you will not find in many laptops. Three USB inputs, a standard 2.0, the upgraded ten times faster 3.0, and also the improved USB3.1 Type C generation 1 which combines power and connectivity for a reversible input that takes the standard 3.0 and adds all of the performance boosts we have discovered over the years.

We have a DL DVDRW for rewriting dvd’s at extremely high speeds effectively doubling the space of a standard DVDRW drive. Their is also an HDMI port, your standard RJ45 port for lan connectivity and a VGA port for connecting an additional monitor.

This laptop also sports a 802.11 ac for superfast wi fi connectivity along with a VGA camera for your webcam needs. Rounding it all out we have a media card reader and 4.0 Bluetooth technology. A 1 year international warranty is also included with purchase.

Value for Money

At less than $700 we have a very efficient decently powerful work station with some nice extras. The ability to connect multiple screens should not put too much pressure on the powerful processor.

Unfortunately, the average gamer would not appreciate this laptop as it lacks in graphics performance. However, gaming is not the point of this laptop.

When comparing this model to others around this price point we find that it’s pretty much middle of the pack on specs but makes up a bit when you look at all of it’s additional features. There is a pretty cool Eye care function for adjusting the look if you have sensitive eyes. ASUS has created a really nice product for the price.

ASUS F556UA-EB71 Review Conclusion

This computer isn’t going to get you a tryout for the Avengers but it’s a really solid machine. ASUS seems to have made this computer with the more advanced consumer in mind. Great for people who work hard processing loads of information be it for programming or graphic designing.

The increased connectivity makes it a really nice workstation for editing audio or video though you will probably need to upgrade the memory.

Definitely not for the hardcore though as that demographic is more suited for laptops that are about a $1,000 more expensive.
